3 July 1942: Today, we celebrate the birthday of Lonnie Smith, master of the Hammond B-3 organ and a giant of soul jazz. With his signature turban, infectious groove, and improvisational brilliance, he brought a joyful, funky spirit to the jazz scene from the 1960s onwards.
Smith gained early fame playing with George Benson and Lou Donaldson before launching a prolific solo career that blended jazz, blues, funk, and gospel. Known for both his deep musicality and playful creativity, he remained a vital force in jazz until his passing in 2021.
