On this day in music history: 29 July
Today's dose of music history celebrates The Isley Brothers.
29 July 1959: The Isley Brothers recorded their single "Shout," which they also wrote. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number 119 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”
Many have covered the song, including Australia’s Johnny O'Keefe, America’s Joey Dee and the Starliters and the UK’s Lulu, all having top ten hits in their respective countries.
The song was famously performed in its entirety by Lloyd G. Williams (credited as Otis Day and the Knights) for the 1978 film National Lampoon's Animal House during the frat house toga party sequence.
Previous doses of music history for 29 July:
1966: The Beatles’ second feature film Help! premiered at The Pavilion in London.
1966: Cream performed their first gig at the Twisted Wheel Club in Manchester.
The music should be loud enough that you can't hear anybody complaining. ~ Eric Alber
